About
Founder
Creamery Studios was founded by textile designer Brigette Houlihan in the summer of 2021. Originally hailing from Galway & with a deep love for the west coast of Ireland, she set out to create a brand which specialises in handcrafted soft furnishings & contemporary art with a hope that each piece will be treasured and handed down from generation to generation. Studying art & textiles in both Galway & Dublin, she graduated from The National College of Art & Design in 2018. After spending many years exploring every form of textiles, she purchased a loop pile tufting gun & Creamey Studios was born.
Materials
With Irelands fascinating heritage and captivating landscape, Brigette has always drawn inspiration from our history & times gone by. The use of Irish wool is an integral part of the brand as it has been to the textile industry throughout Irelands past. Wool is 100% natural, renewable and biodegradable making it a very valuable material. This wool is sourced from 'Donegal Yarns', and is produced in their woollen mill in the village of Kilcar, Co. Donegal. They have a long history of generations of craftspeople producing the highest quality wool & the most beautiful rich colours.
Process
Tufting is an ancient process of punching a thread through a fabric using a needle, pulling the needle back whilst leaving the thread to create a loop. Nowadays a tool called a tufting gun is used, in which yarn is threaded through the needle of the gun and each loop is punched at rapid speed. This process takes a lot precision & concentration, the results of which are unique every time. When the tufted piece is complete it is then carefully cut from its frame & secured by web ironing the edge to insure the loops don't come loose. Brigette then sews this piece onto a linen canvas by hand & makes a wooden frame using locally sourced pine. Every piece is designed, made and finished by Brigette in her Dublin studio.
Sustainability
Establishing a brand which has the least harmful impact on the planet is extremely important to Brigette & will continue to be at the forefront of Creamery Studios. From the production to the packaging, great attention is paid to reusing as much as possible and to ensuring what is purchased is from a responsible company & Irish where possible. Every thread of yarn is used in the making process & every off cut of fabric & wood kept for future projects. By scouring the wool in Ireland the carbon footprint is kept as low as possible.
